Sometimes, the traditional model of weekly therapy doesn’t quite fit what a person needs.
Maybe you’ve tried therapy before but found yourself getting stuck between sessions. Maybe you’re dealing with a single incident of trauma you’d like to address with focused attention—or you’re facing performance anxiety, a life transition, or burnout that can’t wait for a slow drip of healing over six months.
That’s where EMDR intensives come in. Designed to accelerate the healing process, EMDR intensives are structured sessions that take place over one to three days and offer concentrated support for people who are ready to work deeply and efficiently.
And when paired with equine-assisted therapy, the experience becomes even more powerful—because healing doesn’t just happen in your head. It happens through your body, your nervous system, and the relationships that help you feel safe again.
What Are EMDR Intensives?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, a therapy approach developed to help people process traumatic or distressing memories in a way that promotes emotional regulation and integration. It’s been extensively researched and proven effective for treating PTSD, anxiety, phobias, and even performance blocks (Shapiro, 2018).
While weekly EMDR sessions are common, EMDR intensives are a condensed format that allows for several hours of processing in a single day. These are ideal for:
- Individuals with a tight schedule who can’t commit to ongoing weekly sessions
- People seeking faster relief from trauma, grief, or anxiety
- Clients preparing for an upcoming event (like a performance, competition, or life transition)
- High performers, professionals, and athletes who want focused, solution-driven support
How It Works
At Gray Horse Counseling, EMDR intensives are customized based on your goals, history, and nervous system capacity. Most intensives include:
- A 60–90-minute virtual or in-person pre-assessment to clarify goals and build a treatment roadmap
- 3 to 4 hours per day of in-depth EMDR processing over one or more days
- Somatic and mindfulness practices to regulate the nervous system between reprocessing sessions
- Optional equine-assisted therapy to support embodied learning, trust-building, and real-time emotional feedback from a horse partner
- A follow-up session for integration and ongoing support recommendations
What Makes Equine-Assisted EMDR Different?
Horses are nonverbal, emotionally attuned animals who respond to human body language, energy, and intention. When paired with EMDR, they become powerful co-regulators in the healing process.
Imagine this: You’re working through a distressing memory in the EMDR session, and afterward, you walk into the arena with a horse. The horse senses your shift. Maybe they mirror your calmer breath. Maybe they walk up to you and rest their head on your shoulder—an invitation to stay grounded. That moment becomes part of your nervous system’s new narrative: I am safe. I can connect. I can trust.
Equine-assisted EMDR intensives are particularly helpful for clients who struggle with:
- Relational trauma or attachment wounds
- Performance anxiety in high-pressure environments (including equestrian sport)
- Overthinking and emotional suppression
- Difficulty accessing body-based sensations and emotions
The horse doesn’t need you to “get it right.” They need you to be congruent—and that’s where the healing begins.
Cost of EMDR Intensives: Investment in Transformation
While traditional therapy is typically done in 50-minute sessions and is generally covered through insurance, EMDR intensives are priced based on time and customization. EMDR intensives may or may not be covered by insurance, so it can be helpful to plan on this being an out-of-pocket expense. Intensives can be thought of as getting a month or more of therapy in a short period of time. So when thinking about the expense and time, compare this expense and time to several months of therapy. Half-Day EMDR Intensive (3 hours)
Ideal for targeting a single issue like performance anxiety, a recent triggering event, or clarity around a stuck point.
Full-Day EMDR Intensive (6 hours)
This will allow for time to address complex trauma, multiple memories, or combining EMDR with equine-assisted components.
Two-Day or longer EMDR + Equine Intensive Package
Includes 10–12 hours of EMDR + equine-assisted therapy, pre- and post-session support, and guided somatic and nervous system regulation tools.
The rates reflect the clinical preparation, post-processing, and customized attention involved in each intensive. Because of the focused nature of the work, many clients find that one intensive session replaces months of traditional therapy.
Some clients choose to do an intensive as a stand-alone experience. It can also be done in conjunction with other therapies to help get past a possible stuck point in therapy. Others use it as a jumpstart to a longer therapeutic relationship or return for follow-up work when needed. Discussing with your therapist your needs and goals will allow you to get the most out of the experience.
Benefits of EMDR Intensives
Time-Efficient Healing
Rather than waiting months to address a single trauma, EMDR intensives offer powerful shifts in days. It’s like trading a slow, steady climb for a focused lift to higher ground.
Less Disruption, More Flexibility
For working professionals, parents, caregivers, or athletes, weekly therapy isn’t always realistic. Intensives allow you to carve out dedicated space for healing—then return to your life with more capacity.
Depth and Integration
Extended time together allows for deeper processing, fewer interruptions, and more emotional regulation support. You don’t have to end a session right when things are getting meaningful.
Somatic and Relational Learning with Horses
When you combine EMDR with equine work, healing is no longer a mental task—it becomes embodied. You learn to feel safe, not just talk about it.
Personalized, Not Cookie-Cutter
Your intensive is not one-size-fits-all. It’s created around your needs, history, pacing, and resilience. You don’t have to fit your story into a narrow box—we build the container around you.
Is an EMDR Intensive Right for You?
If you feel stuck in traditional therapy, overwhelmed by anxiety, or curious about a more focused and experiential path to healing, an EMDR intensive might be a good fit.
At Gray Horse Counseling, we combine evidence-based techniques with grounded compassion and the healing presence of horses to help you reconnect to yourself, not just as a person with struggles, but as a person with strength.
Healing doesn’t have to take forever. Sometimes, the shift you’ve been waiting for happens in just a few days—when the right support, structure, and setting come together.
