Every person carries a story—sometimes filled with joy, sometimes marked by pain, and often woven with both.
I am not any different from many other therapists who are drawn to the field of trauma therapy; it is our own lived experiences that become the compass guiding us toward this work. Our pasts, with all their challenges and lessons, do more than shape who we are; they inspire us to help others find hope and healing. My past experiences are the driving factor in how I became a therapist and then specialized in trauma. ![]()
I distinctly remember writing a report in grade school about mental health, and I was totally fascinated, and from that point on, I was focused on learning everything I could about why humans do and think the way they do.
The Power of Personal Experience
Growing up, I learned firsthand how life’s unexpected turns and hardships can leave lasting marks. Whether it was witnessing the struggles of loved ones, navigating my own moments of doubt, or simply feeling the weight of not being “enough,” these experiences left an imprint. Over time, I realized that these moments were not just obstacles—they were invitations to understand, to empathize, and to connect more deeply with others.
As I moved through my own healing journey, I discovered the transformative power of being truly seen and heard. The support I received from compassionate therapists and mentors was life-changing. It was through these connections that I began to find my voice, and with it, the courage to step out from behind the shadows of self-doubt.
From Wounds to Wisdom
Becoming a trauma therapist is not just about academic training or professional credentials. It is about turning wounds into wisdom. Our past struggles teach us patience, humility, and resilience. They allow us to sit with others in their pain, not as distant experts, but as fellow travelers who understand the terrain.
At Gray Horse Counseling, my approach is rooted in the belief that healing is possible for everyone. I know what it feels like to be overwhelmed by change, to question your worth, and to long for a sense of belonging. These experiences fuel my commitment to creating a safe, nonjudgmental space where clients can explore their stories and reclaim their strength.
Why Past Experiences Matter
Empathy: Having walked through my own challenges, I am able to offer genuine empathy and understanding.
Authenticity: Clients sense when their therapist “gets it.” My journey allows me to show up authentically, without pretense.
Hope: I am living proof that growth and healing are possible, even when the path is difficult.
Resilience: Each setback has taught me the importance of perseverance and self-compassion—lessons I now share with others.
A Calling, Not Just a Career
Choosing to become a trauma therapist was not a decision I made lightly. It grew from a deep desire to help others find the same hope and freedom I discovered on my own path. My work is guided by the values of empathy, respect, and empowerment. I believe that everyone deserves to feel heard, valued, and capable of change.
If you are struggling with your own story or considering a journey into trauma therapy, know that your past does not define you—it can empower you. The most important step is deciding that you are enough, just as you are. From that foundation, healing and transformation become possible.
“The most important day is deciding whether you are good enough for yourself. It is the day you set yourself free.”
