Group Therapy

“What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas!”

That’s group therapy. Really.

Confidentiality is key to group. Respect is also key, and then we have fun. You get to meet people who share your same fears and hopes and dreams… and they help you move forward. They support you when you’re scared and cheer you on when something good has happened.

You will do the same for them. You learn from each other.

I really enjoy creating and working with the groups because I learn so much from both the group members and the group process. Something magical happens when a group of people gets together with the common goal of helping each other. They really can do great things… and they do.

You get so many benefits from group therapy.

Groups can be more educational or more therapeutic. They can be time-delimited or ongoing.

A group is a safe place to share your feelings and explore the nature of your mental health. You’ll both give and receive support from others with similar difficulties. You’ll benefit from being exposed to new behaviors, thoughts, beliefs, and perspectives.

Group is also a place where you’ll know (and feel) that you’re not alone. It’s a great positive support system.

And it’s also a more affordable alternative to one-on-one therapy sessions.

A little more about what group therapy looks like…

Group therapy involves small groups (up to 8 members). Sessions take place once per week and usually last 1-2 hours.

Groups meet in a quiet room with chairs in a circle. At the beginning of a session, group members introduce themselves and share their reasons for attending the group. They may also discuss their progress and any obstacles or setbacks they have experienced since the last meeting.

The exact activities you’ll see in group therapy sessions will vary from group to group, but they all focus on promoting open, honest communication and establishing trust between group members.

Topics for groups will be based on need and request, but here are some of the issues we’re likely to cover:

  • grief
  • domestic violence
  • childhood trauma
  • chronic illness
  • generalized anxiety disorder
  • post-traumatic stress disorder
  • panic disorder
  • phobias
  • depression

Group Therapy in Virginia Can Lead you to Understanding and Healing

Your childhood was crap. With therapy at Gray Horse Counseling, your future doesn’t have to be. I work with adults who have dysfunctional families (family life). When you were a kid, your family life sucked. So, you’ve adapted to behave at home and out in public very differently. This “split” that worked so well for you as a child is no longer working. How do you live a more congruent life? How do you deal with that internal conflict?

You want to be more authentic in your connections, but this internalized trauma response keeps holding you back. I get it. Your childhood was crap and you didn’t get a chance to truly figure out who you are. It wasn’t safe to be YOU anywhere. Now, this is affecting your relationships, friendships, work relationships, family life, children, how you feel about yourself, all of it.

Back then, you didn’t get to tell anyone. As an online therapist in Virginia, I get to be that person for you. Maybe how you ended up coping with this childhood trauma led to an anxiety disorder, chronic depression, and unmanageable addiction. Let me be clear, there is no right or wrong way to cope. But, these coping skills are no longer serving you the same way they used to. So, let’s figure it out.
