You turned your paper in. He had approved four times he reread it so many times that you can almost memorize it. And yet you still feel that there could be something better that you left out something and what can happen. You’re certain that your boss or your professor is not gonna like the paper the project and yet everyone that sought said it was great. Why is it so hard to let go? Friends come over and you do your best to make them feel at home. You ask if they need anything and they say they are fine and you worry that you haven’t done enough. It is easy to worry and think about considering all the possibilities. Sometimes it’s considered just good planning but when is it not good planning?
What is going to happen tomorrow? Am I going to be late to work? What might happen if my car breaks down on the way to work? These questions come up all the time and you do not understand why it feels like you are so worried about things all the time.
Anxiety is often like this
You were not always thinking that things were going to go wrong. Your friends are now gently teasing you about your worries and you try to put on your “big girl face” and just deal with it. It does not work it leaves feeling more rejected and worried about if your friends like you at all. Furthermore, it just creates a whole new list of things to think about to worry about. So then you tell yourself this is normal everyone gets anxious. It is ok and you can handle and you go out and do something fun for a while and it does all seem to be ok for a while.
This works for a little bit but you soon find yourself back in the same place worrying did it go okay was it right. You don’t know how this happened you’re not even sure how this got started but now it just seems completely out of control and you feel like everything is a mountain and you’re pretty sure it doesn’t need to be.
You’re right it doesn’t need to be a mountain.
Anxiety or worry is pretty normal sometimes it does get to seem like it’s overwhelming and overbearing and taken on a life of its own. Many of the clients that I work with come in with lots of different types of anxiety. Some of the types of anxiety are listed below.
What are the different types of anxiety?
- Generalized Anxiety: this is a type of anxiety when the fear and anxiety do not seem to come from a specific thing but appear more generalized to everything in a person’s life work home play affects all the different areas of life in some fashion.
- Panic Disorder: which is different from a panic attack. Panic disorder does involve frequent panic attacks which usually include pounding a racing heart, sweating, trembling and a sense of being out of control.
- Social Anxiety: intense fear of being watched or judged by others and this can also interfere with activities of daily living; going to school or work. People often have difficulty making eye contact racing heart, blushing, stomach problems, and speaking softly
- Phobia-Related Problems: Intense fear or an aversion to an object or a specific situation. It can be real or imagined. People may worry excessively about seeing the object or facing the situation, take active steps to avoid situations, and experience panic attacks or intense anxiety if they do encounter the situation.
Many of the clients that I see come into therapy because they are experiencing some combination of the types of anxieties described above. My goal in working with clients is to help them find a sense of calm not only in themselves but in their environment. I help clients learn about themselves and learn ways to manage their worries and fears. I also help clients learn where and how the fears came to be so that the fears and anxieties can have a place to go. It’s not easy to face your fears it’s often difficult and sticky.
Therapy for anxiety is not:
- Just get over it you being sensitive
- Stop worrying it will be fine
- Be brave face your fear you will do fine
- This will not take long and it will be over soon
We will set realistic goals together with Anxiety Treatment
We look at your specific problems and then look at a lot of different effective techniques and decide together which ones are going to be able most effective. This does not mean that I will not ask you to step outside your comfort zone as I will but I will also respect your knowledge and input in the situation. This will be hard at times and it will also be fun and it may even seem silly sometimes as I like to find ways to play and use humor in sessions. Finding the calm in ourselves is different for everyone and I believe it is my role to help you find your way to calm.
